S, G, G-Limited
The first MR2's were introduced in June 1984 to the Japanese market in both the hard top coupe and sunroof body styles. Two normally aspirated engines were available: the base model 1.5 litre SOHC 4A-LU (AW10), and the more luxurious 1.6 litre 4A-GELU (AW11).
In June 1985, the more highly specified G-Limited model was added to the model line, which included a factory aerokit that improved the aerodynamics of the car by 0.1 Cd (from 0.35 to 0.34 Cd) and gave the car positive down force.
In August 1986, the cars had to meet new emissions standards. Thus, the 4A-GELU engine power (on the G and G-Limited) was dropped from 130HP to 120HP, and consequently the torque was dropped from 108 ft lbs to 103 ft lbs. The valve covers fitted on these engines were red, where the previous version had blue valve covers. A new T-bar body style was also introduced at this time, adding approx. 30 kg to the weight of the car due to the extra stiffening required as well as the weight of the glass panels themselves. |

G S/C, G-Limited S/C
In August 1987, the supercharged 4A-GZELU engine with 145HP and 135 ft lbs of torque was added to the MR2 lineup in reply to customer requests for a more powerful engine. The Roots Type Intercooled Supercharger had a stock setting of 8psi boost. The new supercharger versions came with it's own unique gear ratios as well as stronger and much larger transmission case, driveshaft, and clutch system to cope with the extra torque. In Japan, this model could be ordered with the hardtop instead of T-Tops. |

Super Edition
Starting June 1989, a final limited edition "Super Edition" run of just 250 highly specified cars were built. Based on the G-Limited S/C T-Bar package, these cars were all painted midnight blue mica metallic and came fully optioned with mirrored T-bar glass, Recaro seats, Momo steering wheel and gearknob, retractable side mirrors, pile carpets and special trim. |
